Test cricket

Test cricket gets written off as boring by people who've only ever seen the highlights — five days, no fixed number of overs, long stretches where nothing looks like it's happening. But the scoreboard is the least interesting part of it. Underneath a session that looks stationary — same total, same batters, nobody out — the balance of the game is usually moving: a bowler settling into a spell, a batter starting to middle it, a declaration being quietly set up three sessions in advance.

The widget below plays out a single Test match — illustrative, not a real one — session by session, with a running “momentum” line alongside the bare scorecard, so you can see the game swinging even when the total on the board barely changes. Drag the slider to jump around, or just let it play.

Day 1, Morning

An illustrative Test match — the shape of a five-day game (and the swings within it), not a real scorecard.

  1. Day 1, Morning: Home 45–1 — openers settle in cautiously.
  2. Day 1, Afternoon: Home 130–2 — a composed partnership takes control.
  3. Day 1, Evening: Home 210–3 — a late flurry of boundaries before the close.
  4. Day 2, Morning: Home 240–5 — two quick wickets let Away claw back control.
  5. Day 2, Afternoon: Home all out 340 — a below-par finish given the platform.
  6. Day 2, Evening: Away 60–1 — the openers see out a testing evening session.
  7. Day 3, Morning: Away 140–2 — a fluent counter-attack shrinks the deficit fast.
  8. Day 3, Afternoon: Away 220–4 — two wickets fall but the total keeps climbing.
  9. Day 3, Evening: Away all out 300 — Home lead by 40 runs on first innings.
  10. Day 4, Morning: Home (2nd innings) 50–2 — the lead is extended cautiously.
  11. Day 4, Afternoon: Home 140–5 — a clatter of wickets threatens the advantage.
  12. Day 4, Evening: Home declare 220–8 — Away need 260 to win.
  13. Day 5, Morning: Away 80–2 — two early wickets put Home back in control.
  14. Day 5, Afternoon: Away 180–6 — every wicket and boundary now matters.
  15. Day 5, Evening: Away all out 254 — Home win by 5 runs.
